Eating Healthy during the Holidays

If you are watching what you eat, the holidays can present a unique set of challenges. It might be tempting to take the next few weeks to overindulge, but you’ll probably regret it later. There are several ways to enjoy the holiday treats while still maintaining healthy habits:
o Get enough sleep. If you are well rested, you’re less likely to binge.
o Grab a smaller plate. You’ll be inclined to eat smaller portions.
o When you’re on the go, resist fast food by bringing along a healthy snack or opt for a sit down restaurant over fast food.
o Watch the snacks. Mixed nuts, cheese and crackers, and veggies with ranch are OK in small quantities, but the calories add up.
o Drink water over sweet drinks. Wine, cider, and alcoholic beverages go down quickly but have high calorie counts.
o Save the worst for last. Studies show that what we eat first is often what we eat most. Enjoy a broth-based soup, salad, or lean meat before indulging in carbs.
o Track your food. It’s easier to rein in your eating when you can easily see how much you’ve consumed.
